Colorful options for the Autumn Seasons
In my previous post, I wrote about alternatives to black, gray, navy, and beige coats for the three Summer Seasons. Today, we’ll talk about colorful autumn and winter outerwear options for the Autumn types. How can you choose something from the store offerings that will match your color palette and stay with you for years? What coat color will go well with your hats, scarves, and shoes? What coat color will keep you from blending into the gray and dull crowd?

Soft Autumn
Instead of the common brown or beige, go for an equally elegant but less obvious turquoise. If you’re not afraid of color, salmon pink or coral can be an interesting option. If you’re concerned about the shiny finish of a puffer jacket, pair it with matte accessories to tone it down a bit.
True Autumn
Instead of dark and muted olive — a great neutral for Autumn — choose a lighter and more vibrant shade. The lighter versions of warm brown, such as pumpkin and curry, can help brighten up your winter wardrobe.
Dark Autumn
A patterned coat that includes many warm, rich hues provides the kind of color and value (light-dark) contrasts that flatter this Autumn type. If you’re not a fan of patterns, deep moss green in a heavy, textured fabric will be a perfect choice.
What to wear these colors with?
Soft Autumn
Soft Autumn represents a shadowed version of the Autumn palette, so wearing only light colors from head to toe doesn’t bring out its full potential. The salmon-colored coat is relatively light, so it will look better on you when paired with darker accessories — for example, browns with burgundy or cherry undertones. A patterned scarf combining browns and pinks can help bridge the contrast between light and dark.
For the turquoise coat, you can choose accessories in neutral colors. Use the color of the coat’s lining or hood as a reference when looking for winter hats, scarves, gloves, and boots in beiges, browns, and greenish grays.
True Autumn
Autumn types look wonderful in color contrasts which involve pairing colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel. Try contrasting your curry-colored coat with accessories in a sea-green or teal tone.
Google might suggest pairing olive with beige and brown — but why not try something more creative? How about rowan red and cognac? This combination radiates cozy warmth, perfect for gray, chilly autumn days. Finish the look with a lipstick in a coral-red shade.
Dark Autumn
The patterned coat already includes many colors, so adding new hues — even from the same color palette — creates a risks of turning the rich, vibrant composition into a chaotic mix. Build your outfits using the shades already present in the pattern: pumpkin, tawny, and warm blue.
In case of green coat, add a hat, scarf, shoes, and bag in rusty reds to create the kind of striking green–red contrast that looks fantastic on Autumns.
The perfect coat
The coats chosen for this post were selected mainly for their colors. I didn’t take into account fabrics, styles, prices, or current trends. My goal is to show you that you’re not limited to classic colors like black, navy, or beige.
Lastly, I’d like to remind you that colors in photos don’t always reflect reality perfectly. If you order something online, check the color at home with your personal color palette to make sure the coat matches your Season.
